Cognitive Assessment involves evaluating mental functions such as memory, attention, language, reasoning, processing speed and executive functioning. It may be undertaken following brain injury, stroke, neurological illness or where cognitive decline, dementia or other difficulties are suspected. Assessment can include clinical interviews, standardised cognitive tests, review of medical records and consideration of how difficulties affect everyday activities. Findings may inform diagnosis, rehabilitation, support needs and further investigation. Independent Cognitive Assessment Expert Witnesses can provide specialist opinions on cognitive impairment, mental capacity, causation, functional limitations, rehabilitation needs and prognosis in Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Court of Protection proceedings.
