Small for Gestational Age (SGA) describes a baby whose estimated fetal weight or birth weight falls below the tenth centile for gestational age. Some babies are constitutionally small, while others may have underlying growth restriction. Assessment includes ultrasound measurements, Doppler studies and monitoring of fetal wellbeing. Independent expert witnesses can provide opinions on antenatal surveillance, interpretation of findings, referral decisions, delivery timing and causation in Clinical Negligence proceedings.
