Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) provides breathing support through a face or nasal mask without the need for an invasive airway. It is used in selected patients with respiratory failure, including those with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity hypoventilation syndrome and certain neuromuscular conditions. Effective treatment requires appropriate patient selection, ventilator settings, monitoring and timely escalation when NIV is unsuccessful. Independent NIV Expert Witnesses can provide specialist opinions on treatment decisions, contraindications, monitoring, delayed intubation, complications, causation and standards of care in Clinical Negligence cases.
