Induction of Labour involves the use of medical or mechanical methods to initiate childbirth before labour begins naturally. It may be recommended for prolonged pregnancy, maternal health conditions, fetal growth restriction or concerns about fetal wellbeing. Methods include cervical ripening medication, balloon catheters, artificial rupture of membranes and oxytocin infusion. Potential complications include uterine hyperstimulation, fetal distress and failed induction requiring caesarean delivery. Independent Induction of Labour Expert Witnesses can provide specialist clinical opinions on clinical indications, risk assessment, informed consent, induction methods, fetal monitoring, management of complications, delays in delivery and standards of care in Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury cases.
