Complex Trauma refers to the psychological effects of prolonged, repeated or multiple traumatic experiences, often involving interpersonal harm, abuse or neglect. It can affect emotional regulation, relationships, self-perception and everyday functioning, and may be associated with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), depression, anxiety or dissociative symptoms. Assessment involves a detailed trauma history, psychiatric or psychological evaluation and consideration of coexisting conditions. Treatment may include trauma-focused psychological therapies and multidisciplinary support. Independent Complex Trauma Expert Witnesses can provide specialist opinions on psychological injury, diagnosis, causation, treatment needs, functional impairment and prognosis in Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Family proceedings.
