Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal diagnostic procedure used to identify certain genetic and chromosomal conditions in an unborn baby. It involves collecting a small sample of placental tissue, usually between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, under ultrasound guidance. CVS may be offered following abnormal screening results, concerning ultrasound findings or a family history of inherited disorders. Potential complications include miscarriage, bleeding and infection. Independent Chorionic Villus Sampling Expert Witnesses can provide specialist clinical opinions on patient selection, genetic counselling, informed consent, procedural technique, test interpretation, complications and standards of care in Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury cases.
