Attachment Disorders are mental health conditions associated with significant disturbances in early caregiving relationships, particularly where children have experienced severe neglect or insufficient opportunities to form stable attachments. Recognised conditions include Reactive Attachment Disorder and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder. Presentations may involve difficulties seeking comfort, emotional withdrawal or unusually familiar behaviour towards unfamiliar adults. Assessment considers developmental history, caregiving experiences, behaviour and alternative explanations for symptoms. Support may involve specialist psychological interventions and work with caregivers. Independent Attachment Disorders Expert Witnesses can provide opinions on diagnosis, developmental impact, psychological needs, safeguarding, treatment and prognosis in Family, Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury proceedings.
