Introduction

Professor Sotirios Bisdas is an expert witness and Honorary Consultant Neuroradiologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he has held a substantive consultant position from 2015-2025. He specialises in adult and paediatric neuroimaging, spinal imaging and head and neck imaging, with particular expertise in brain tumours, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative disease and advanced MRI techniques.

Having worked as a senior consultant neuroradiologist since 2008, Professor Bisdas has extensive experience interpreting complex neurological imaging across a broad range of conditions affecting the brain, spine and head and neck. His clinical practice includes the assessment of neuro-oncological disease, neuro-vascular pathology and stroke, traumatic brain and spine injury, dementia and neurodegeneration, epilepsy and metabolic brain disorders, alongside specialist expertise in advanced MRI, functional MRI and molecular imaging techniques, providing specialist input across some of the most challenging areas of contemporary neuroradiology. Since 2015, he has been providing an internationally acclaimed second medical opinion service that receives high praise from patients.

In addition to his role at UCLH, he has served as an Honorary Consultant Neuroradiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, supporting specialist paediatric neuroimaging services, and currently serves as neuroradiologist for elite sports athletes. He holds senior academic appointments at University College London, the University of Tübingen, and the European University in Cyprus. He holds visiting Professor posts at the University of Messina and the MD Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas. He is the Chief Editor in Neuroradiology for the British Journal of Radiology Open and the Frontiers in Radiology scientific journals. He is active and worldwide influential researcher collaborating with leading neurological centres worldwide.

Medico Legal Experience Summary

Professor Sotirios Bisdas has been undertaking medico legal work since 2012 and accepts instructions in both clinical negligence and personal injury matters. He has experience acting for claimants, defendants and as a jointly instructed expert, and has experience preparing joint statements and attending court where imaging evidence is central to the issues in dispute.

His medico legal practice focuses on the interpretation of neuroradiological imaging in complex adult and paediatric cases involving brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, birth-related brain injury, brain and spinal tumours, non-accidental injury and head and neck pathology. He is instructed to provide expert opinion on breach of duty, causation and imaging evidence, assisting solicitors in understanding the significance of radiological findings within the wider clinical context.

Professor Bisdas accepts instructions across a broad range of neurological and neuroradiological matters, particularly where specialist imaging interpretation is required to address disputed clinical issues and support the assessment of liability and causation.

Clinical Interests

Professor Bisdas' clinical interests focus on the use of advanced neuroimaging techniques to investigate complex neurological, degenerative, traumatic and oncological conditions affecting both adult and paediatric patients. A significant proportion of his clinical practice involves the assessment and monitoring of brain and spinal tumours, where imaging plays a central role in diagnosis, treatment planning and evaluation of disease progression.

He is also extensively involved in the investigation of traumatic and acquired neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, hypoxic ischaemic injury and a range of metabolic and inflammatory disorders affecting the central nervous system. His work frequently supports the diagnosis and characterisation of neurodegenerative conditions, including dementia and other progressive neurological diseases, as well as epilepsy.

Alongside his neurological practice, Professor Bisdas has specialist expertise in head and neck imaging, including the assessment of oncological, vascular and structural pathology. His clinical interests extend to advanced MRI applications, molecular imaging, PET MRI and functional imaging techniques, supporting the evaluation of complex cases where conventional imaging alone may not provide sufficient diagnostic information.

Research, Teaching & Publications Summary

Professor Bisdas combines a substantial academic and research portfolio with an active role in teaching and professional leadership within neuroradiology. He has authored 375 peer-reviewed publications contributed to multiple book chapters and delivered more than 250 scientific presentations and invited lectures internationally. He holds senior academic appointments in various academic institutions, including at University College London and the University of Tübingen, serves on the editorial boards of several leading radiology journals, and has secured research funding for pioneering work in neuro-oncology imaging, advanced MRI techniques and molecular imaging.
