Mrs Kim Burns has undertaken medico-legal work since 2022, providing independent expert opinion in clinical negligence claims relating to midwifery practice. She accepts instructions in cases involving antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, with particular experience in matters concerning birth injury, cerebral palsy, wrongful birth, maternity risk assessment, consent, and the overall management of maternity care.

Her medico-legal practice includes preparing screening, breach of duty and causation reports, offering clear, evidence-based opinions on the standard of midwifery care and whether any identified breaches contributed to the injuries or outcomes in question. Drawing on her extensive clinical experience in community midwifery and health visiting, Mrs Burns provides well-reasoned opinions on complex maternity care issues, helping solicitors assess the merits of claims involving pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. She has experience advising on a broad range of maternity-related allegations and is recognised for providing balanced, clinically informed reports that address the key medico-legal issues in dispute.

Clinical Interests

Mrs Burns' current clinical practice centres on providing comprehensive care to women, babies and families across both community midwifery and health visiting services. She supports women throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period, undertaking clinical assessments, maternity risk assessments, care planning and ongoing monitoring to ensure safe, individualised care. Her practice also includes supporting homebirths, promoting maternal wellbeing and guiding families through the transition to parenthood, with a particular interest in the fourth trimester and the physical and emotional recovery following childbirth.

Alongside her midwifery practice, Mrs Burns delivers health visiting services focused on infant health, early childhood development and family wellbeing. She regularly assesses the health and developmental needs of babies and young children, supports infant feeding, promotes positive parent-infant relationships and provides evidence-based health education to families. A significant aspect of her practice involves safeguarding children and vulnerable families, working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to identify risk, coordinate care and ensure appropriate support is in place.
