Introduction

Mr Rupert Wharton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon and expert witness at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he specialises in hand and wrist surgery. He also practises at King Edward VII’s Hospital and New Victoria Hospital in London. His principal areas of clinical expertise include hand, wrist and elbow surgery, upper limb trauma, nerve compression syndromes, tendon injuries, ligament injuries and complex reconstructive procedures.

His current clinical practice encompasses the assessment and treatment of both acute traumatic injuries and elective conditions affecting the upper limb. He has extensive experience managing hand and wrist fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, Dupuytren’s disease, thumb base arthritis and nerve compression disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. His specialist expertise includes wrist arthroscopy, tendon transfers, ligament reconstruction, joint replacement and joint fusion, alongside the non-operative and surgical management of complex hand and wrist conditions. Working closely with hand therapists and physiotherapists, he delivers comprehensive care from diagnosis through to rehabilitation.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Wharton has held professional leadership roles within the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association, serving as Publicity Officer and representing the organisation on British Orthopaedic Association committees. His advanced fellowship training in hand and upper limb surgery, together with his focused specialist practice, underpins his authority in the assessment and management of a broad range of traumatic and elective hand and wrist conditions.

Medico Legal Experience Summary

Mr Rupert Wharton has undertaken medico-legal work since 2023, accepting instructions in both clinical negligence and personal injury claims. His practice includes claimant, defendant and joint instructions, providing independent expert opinion on injuries and conditions affecting the hand, wrist and upper limb.

He prepares screening, breach of duty, causation, and condition and prognosis reports, with particular expertise in cases involving fractures, ligament and tendon injuries, nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytren's disease, thumb base arthritis and other traumatic or elective hand and wrist conditions. His opinions are informed by his specialist clinical practice in hand and wrist surgery, enabling him to provide detailed assessments on diagnosis, treatment, surgical management, outcomes and prognosis in complex orthopaedic cases.

Clinical Interests
