Introduction

Mr Alistair Duncan is an Emeritus Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon, Oncologist and expert witness who practised at Northamptonshire University Hospital for 30 years, serving as Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon and Lead for Gynaecological Oncology from 1993 until his retirement from NHS practice in 2023.

His principal areas of subspecialist clinical expertise include gynaecological oncology, advanced gynaecological surgery, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, pelvic ultra-sound and colposcopy.  He also has extensive experience in the investigation and management of complex benign and malignant gynaecological conditions, pelvic floor disorders and the management of endometriosis.

His clinical practice encompassed both elective and emergency gynaecology and included dedicated one-stop clinics using colposcopy and pelvic ultrasound for the assessment of suspected cancers of the vulva, cervix, endometrium and ovaries.

Mr Duncan held senior leadership roles in gynaecological oncology, leading multidisciplinary teams and mentoring colleagues in advanced open and laparoscopic pelvic surgery. He also served as a National Peer Reviewer of UK Cancer Services, and has over 20 years’ experience in medical education, including teaching on regional courses, examining for the postgraduate MRCOG exams, and as a Preceptor for the part 3 MRCOG course.

Medico Legal Experience Summary

Mr Alistair Duncan has been undertaking medico-legal work since 2003, providing independent expert opinion in clinical negligence claims involving the diagnosis, investigation and management of benign and malignant gynaecological conditions. His practice encompasses instructions from both claimants and defendants, with experience attending court to give expert evidence.

He prepares screening and advisory, breach of duty, causation, and condition and prognosis reports. His medico-legal practice particularly encompasses gynaecological oncology, delayed diagnosis, colposcopy, specialist gynaecological ultrasound and complications associated with open, laparoscopic and minimally invasive pelvic surgery. He also accepts instructions involving endometriosis, pelvic floor surgery, urinary incontinence, postmenopausal bleeding and ovarian pathology, drawing on his broader general gynaecological experience. Mr Duncan provides clear, balanced and evidence-based opinions to help solicitors address the principal clinical and medico-legal issues in dispute.

Clinical Interests
