Introduction

Mr Ajit Sofat is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and expert witness based at The Neuro Chambers, having practised as a consultant in neurological surgery from 1996 until his retirement from substantive NHS practice at Salford Royal Hospital in 2019. He specialises in general neurosurgery, neuro-oncology and spinal surgery, with particular expertise in brain tumours, cauda equina syndrome, spinal cord compression, degenerative spinal disease, spinal trauma, head injury and traumatic brain injury.

Mr Sofat has extensive experience managing complex adult neurosurgical conditions across cranial, spinal and trauma practice. During his consultant career, he treated the full spectrum of neurosurgical presentations, including acute brain and spinal injury, hydrocephalus, cerebrovascular disorders, spinal tumours and complex spinal pathology. For the final 15 years of his NHS practice, his work focused particularly on neuro-oncology and spinal surgery while continuing to contribute to the general neurosurgical on-call service.

He is also recognised for his work in awake cranial surgery and day case spinal procedures, having been among the first surgeons in the UK to perform cranial neurosurgery entirely under awake conditions and leading the development of day case spinal surgery at Salford Royal Hospital.

Medico Legal Experience Summary

Mr Ajit Sofat has been undertaking medico-legal work since 2000 and accepts instructions in clinical negligence and personal injury matters. He has experience acting for both claimants and defendants, providing expert opinion in cases requiring neurosurgical assessment of liability, causation, condition and prognosis.

His medico-legal practice focuses on complex neurosurgical issues arising from brain and spinal injury, including traumatic brain injury, head injury, spinal cord injury, cauda equina syndrome, spinal cord compression, spinal trauma and degenerative spinal disease. He is also instructed in matters involving neuro-oncology, brain tumours, spinal tumours, subarachnoid haemorrhage and complications relating to general neurosurgical practice.

Mr Sofat examines adult claimants and provides solicitor-focused opinion in cases where specialist neurosurgical expertise is required to assess injury, treatment, progression, prognosis and the relationship between clinical events and neurological outcome.

Clinical Interests

Mr Sofat’s clinical interests centre on complex cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions, particularly cases involving tumour, trauma, spinal compression and degenerative spinal disease. His expertise is applied to the assessment of patients with suspected or established brain and spinal pathology, including brain tumours, spinal tumours, cauda equina syndrome, spinal cord compression, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

A substantial part of his specialist practice has involved evaluating neurological symptoms, correlating clinical findings with imaging, and determining whether patients require conservative management, surgical intervention or ongoing monitoring. His spinal interests include degenerative disease, spinal trauma, minimally invasive techniques and day case spinal procedures, while his cranial practice includes neuro-oncology, head injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage and selected complex operative techniques such as awake surgery.

His clinical interests are therefore concentrated on the diagnosis, management and surgical treatment of adult neurosurgical conditions where brain, spine or nerve function is at risk.
