Introduction

John Obodoechina is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and expert witness, currently working within the Trafford Urgent Community Response Team at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. His principal clinical expertise encompasses urgent community response, same day emergency care, acute medicine, advanced clinical assessment and diagnosis, frailty management, admission avoidance and independent prescribing.

John works autonomously in the community, assessing, diagnosing and treating adults with acute and complex healthcare needs. His practice focuses on providing timely intervention to prevent unnecessary hospital admission and enable patients to remain safely at home wherever appropriate. He undertakes comprehensive clinical assessments, develops evidence-based management plans, prescribes medication and coordinates care across multidisciplinary teams and acute and community services.

His wider clinical experience spans critical care, community services, Virtual Ward and Hospital at Home models, and specialist haemoglobinopathy care, giving him a broad understanding of patients moving between acute and community settings. He also has significant experience in clinical leadership, governance, audit and service improvement, including the development of clinical pathways and investigation of clinical incidents.

Medico Legal Experience Summary

John Obodoechina commenced medico-legal practice in 2026 and undertakes expert witness instructions in Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury, Coroner’s Inquests and Professional Regulatory / Fitness to Practise matters. His work includes providing independent opinion on standards of nursing care through detailed review and analysis of nursing and medical records.

His medico-legal expertise is particularly relevant to cases involving advanced clinical assessment, acute illness, urgent and community-based care, frailty, admission avoidance, prescribing, discharge planning and multidisciplinary care coordination. He is able to address issues concerning breach of duty and causation, as well as the ongoing impact of injury, condition and prognosis, future care requirements and equipment needs. His experience across acute and community settings also enables him to consider rehabilitation requirements and the practical support required following injury or deterioration in health.

Clinical Interests

John’s clinical interests focus on the assessment, diagnosis and management of adults with acute and complex health needs in community settings. He has particular expertise in managing patients who may otherwise require hospital admission, including those presenting with acute illness, frailty and deterioration requiring timely clinical assessment and intervention.

His day-to-day practice involves comprehensive clinical assessment, autonomous diagnostic decision-making and the development of evidence-based treatment plans. As an independent prescriber, he is able to initiate and manage medication as part of a patient’s treatment while determining whether their condition can be safely managed at home or requires escalation to acute services.

A significant focus of his practice is admission avoidance and supporting safe care outside hospital. This involves coordinating multidisciplinary input, managing transitions between acute and community services, and contributing to discharge planning and patient flow. His clinical interests also encompass Same Day Emergency Care and Virtual Ward and Hospital at Home models, with a particular emphasis on delivering safe, responsive care for patients with complex needs.
