Introduction

Dr Peter Flynn is a Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiologist and expert witness at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, where he has held consultant posts for over two decades. His principal areas of expertise include diagnostic imaging of the brain, spine and skull base, together with complex neurointerventional procedures such as endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms and mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke.

Dr Flynn’s clinical practice encompasses the investigation and management of a broad spectrum of neurological conditions affecting both adult and paediatric patients. He provides specialist interpretation of advanced CT, MRI and catheter angiography studies, supporting the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease, brain and spinal pathology, skull base disorders and other complex neurological conditions. In addition to his diagnostic responsibilities, he performs a range of specialist neurointerventional procedures, requiring detailed anatomical knowledge and technical expertise in the treatment of complex vascular disorders.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Flynn serves as Medical Director of Affidea Ireland and has held national leadership roles with the British Society of Neuroradiology and the UK Neurointerventional Group, contributing to the advancement of neuroradiology standards and specialist practice. His extensive clinical experience, combined with leadership in service development and innovation, has established him as a recognised authority in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology.

His medico-legal practice also includes professional regulatory matters, having provided expert evidence for Irish Medical Council fitness to practise proceedings and expert opinion to the General Medical Council on standards of care in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. In addition, he has experience providing expert opinion in criminal proceedings, including matters involving alleged gross medical manslaughter, bringing specialist neuroradiological expertise to complex legal cases requiring detailed radiological analysis.

Clinical Interests

Dr Flynn’s clinical practice centres on the investigation, diagnosis and image-guided treatment of complex neurological and neurovascular conditions affecting both adult and paediatric patients. He undertakes detailed interpretation of advanced neuroimaging, including MRI, CT and catheter angiography of the brain, spine, skull base and orbits, supporting the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease, traumatic injury, spinal disorders, vascular malformations and other complex neurological pathology.

A significant proportion of his practice involves neurointerventional procedures, including endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms and mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke. He also performs specialist diagnostic cerebral and spinal angiography, CT-guided biopsy, myelography and cisternography, applying advanced imaging techniques to guide diagnosis and clinical decision-making.

His expertise extends across both routine and highly specialised neuroradiology, with particular interests in brain and spinal imaging, vascular abnormalities such as arteriovenous malformations and fistulae, and the assessment of complex neurovascular conditions. Through his day-to-day clinical work, he provides specialist diagnostic support and minimally invasive treatments that contribute to the management of patients with acute, chronic and complex neurological disease.
