Dr Avinash Aujayeb

Dr Avinash Aujayeb is a Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where he has been a consultant since 2013, and is an expert witness. His principal areas of expertise include pleural and respiratory medicine, with specialist interests in benign and malignant pleural disease, mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung disease, pleural effusion and infection, pneumothorax and pleural interventions.

He leads and delivers specialist pleural and respiratory services alongside his general respiratory medicine practice, providing specialist pleural clinics and an on-call service for acute presentations. His procedural practice includes local anaesthetic thoracoscopy, image-guided pleural biopsy and the insertion and removal of indwelling pleural catheters. He has also helped establish services for ambulatory pneumothorax management and indwelling peritoneal catheter insertion.

Dr Aujayeb has contributed to the development of the Northern Mesothelioma MDT and to local and regional clinical guidelines. He also leads thoracic ultrasound training and currently chairs the British Thoracic Society’s Pleural Strategic Advisory Group, reflecting his senior expertise in pleural disease and respiratory care.

Dr Avinash Aujayeb has undertaken medico-legal work since 2026, providing expert opinion in clinical negligence, personal injury and industrial disease claims. His medico-legal practice is claimant focused, with instructions involving adult claimants and matters arising from respiratory and general medical care.

He accepts instructions for screening and advisory opinions, breach of duty, causation, and condition and prognosis reports. His expertise is particularly relevant to cases involving respiratory and pleural disease, including mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung disease, pleural effusion and infection, pneumothorax, and issues concerning pleural interventions and procedures. He has completed formal medico-legal report writing training with Bond Solon and is able to provide focused expert opinion across the different stages of a claim.

Dr Aujayeb’s clinical practice has a particular focus on the assessment and management of pleural disease, encompassing both benign and malignant conditions. He regularly manages patients with pleural effusions, pleural infection and pneumothorax, alongside those affected by asbestos-related lung disease and mesothelioma. His practice also includes general respiratory inpatient care and the management of acute respiratory presentations.

A significant part of his specialist work involves investigating pleural abnormalities and determining the appropriate diagnostic or therapeutic intervention. His procedural expertise includes medical thoracoscopy, image-guided pleural biopsy and the use of indwelling pleural catheters, allowing him to investigate and manage complex pleural presentations directly. He is also involved in ambulatory management of pneumothorax and provides specialist input for patients requiring ongoing pleural care.

His day-to-day practice therefore combines diagnostic assessment, procedural intervention and continuing management of patients with a broad range of pleural and respiratory disorders.

Dr Aujayeb is actively involved in clinical education, delivering thoracic ultrasound training and supervising Pleural Fellows and MRes candidates in their clinical and academic development. He also contributes to local and regional guideline development, supporting the translation of specialist respiratory expertise into clinical standards and professional education.
